Finding illumination in a movie theater isn’t an everyday occurrence. And yet, to anyone born prior to the 21st century, all of the hype surrounding Billie Eilish makes a lot more sense now. Somewhere just shy of 30 minutes into Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft - The Tour Live in 3D, waves of realization are sure to wash over parents and older loved ones who accompany their children and grandchildren to the James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar, The Terminator) directed concert documentary experience. One needs look no further than the tear-streaked faces of those in attendance for Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour to understand just how much the 24 year old musical sensation means to her fans. Eilish’s songs are only part of that equation, as the diminutive vocal giant radiates a shockwave of body positivity, acceptance and self-love that lyrics and music videos cannot possibly convey. In this way, Eilish feels like a necessary panacea to the infinite doomscroll of judgement and prejudice lurking only one screen away. The unlikely duo of Eilish and Cameron, separated in age by nearly a half century, have crafted a visual and sonic 3D masterpiece, recalibrating the standard of what a concert film can be, and bridging the gap of generational understanding.
Filmed over a two night stint in Manchester, England, the ethnically and culturally diverse crowds of young men, women, and those who are not defined by their gender identities, participated in what can only be described as a quasi-religious experience, leaving countless youthful fans emotionally spent, the result of a devastating combination of awe and appreciation. The hidden brilliance behind Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft - The Tour Live in 3D is that unlike most concert films, which usually present as the next best thing to having been in attendance, Cameron’s film presents a superior three-dimensional visual experience, providing access to Eilish and her show that even fans that can afford front row seats could never experience. In this way, the 3 time Oscar winning filmmaker and the 2 time Academy Award winning musician, have cracked an age-old code while simultaneously crafting history’s preeminent concert documentary.
The endless array of Cameron’s carefully crafted vantage points capture the tonal vacillation of Eilish’s live setlist, feeling more like symbiosis than the result of thoughtful preproduction construction. Billie Eilish’s vocal range highlights the musical diversity of her concert as the cultural icon flows effortlessly between the somber and searching “What Was I Made For?” to the trance-like “CHIHIRO” with ease. The free spirited performer interstitially reminds those in attendance that they are loved and respected in her presence, a presence that is carefully constructed for a specific purpose. Eilish’s wardrobe is an inspiration to behold, clad in oversized clothing to avoid revealing her body, an intentional choice she makes to stomp the tired trope of overly sexualized female singers. The outwardly mismatched collaboration of James Cameron and Billie Eilish have accomplished the unthinkable. Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft - The Tour Live in 3D, exceeds all genre expectations and in the process creates an important emotional window into the hearts and minds of global youth.
Target Score 9/10 - While it is unclear if anyone had a James Cameron / Billie Eilish collaboration on their Bingo card, the result of the mismatched duo proves unimpeachable. Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft - The Tour Live in 3D, represents a new frontier in concert documentary filmmaking, pairing an undeniable live show with mesmerizing visual access.
