Big Mistakes (Netflix)

With the passing of Catherine O’Hara in January of 2026, Schitt’s Creek fans had to let go of the idea of the show ever coming back. However, star and co-creator Dan Levy brings back aspects of the quirky family comedy in his new Netflix series Big Mistakes. Big Mistakes is a genre-blurring delight that delivers an organized crime drama in the format of an absurdist comedy.

Levy plays a pastor. Yes, the actor who brought audiences the irreverent, self-involved David Rose, cast himself as Nicky, the spiritual leader of a congregation. One would expect certain pious traits with a member of the clergy, and in some ways, Nicky lives up to that; he is kind and caring and a good listener. He is also, however, full of Levy’s charm, wit and exaggerated emotive expressions. He is believably well-meaning, so when he and his sister, played by Taylor Ortega (Ghosts, Kim Possible), find themselves owing a debt to some unsavory criminal store owners, the audience cannot help but root for Nicky as he gets deeper and deeper enmeshed in the drama. The criminal underworld of Big Mistakes exists in a strange space between genuine danger and dark comedy. The people threatening Nicky rarely feel like hardened mobsters so much as people with erratic personalities, which allows the series to maintain its comedic tone even as the stakes escalate.

Levy is deservedly the star; he’s fun to watch and drives the action of the series, but his cast member Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne) steals the scene every time. Playing his sometimes histrionic and always passionate mother, Metcalf delivers a performance that solidifies her status as a comedy legend complete with perfect tone and timing. Her true skill is that even while maintaining the comedy, she allows room for the emotion of the scene to breathe. Metcalf takes her supporting role in Big Mistakes and makes it an emotional center for the show.

Big Mistakes benefits from not taking itself too seriously. The characters are likeable, and so the audience can forgive them when they act, like the title implies, in poorly thought-out and impulsive ways. In these eight episodes, the series sets elements in motion for a promising second season.

Rachel’s Rating: 7/10

Netflix’s Big Mistakes combines crime and comedy into an offbeat story led by Dan Levy as a compassionate but increasingly overwhelmed pastor pulled into dangerous circumstances. The series balances eccentric humor with genuine emotional stakes, allowing its chaotic characters to remain endearing even at their worst.
