X-Men ‘97, Season 2 (Disney+)

By: Nick Zednik

X-Men ’97 faced the difficult task of proving that lightning could strike twice. Fortunately, Marvel Animation has delivered another thrilling, emotionally resonant, and visually spectacular chapter that further cements the series as one of the finest superhero offerings to date. Picking up after Season 1’s jaw-dropping cliffhanger, Season 2 wastes little time throwing viewers back into the mutant chaos. The X-Men are scattered across different points in time, forcing the series to juggle multiple storylines spanning the distant past, the far future, and the familiar 1990s. While that premise could easily become convoluted, the writers expertly weave these narratives together into a cohesive and compelling saga.

At the center of this season’s turmoil is the ancient warlord, Apocalypse, who finally receives the adaptation X-Men fans have long desired for. Unlike previous portrayals, this version feels genuinely intimidating, philosophical, and deeply connected to the season’s themes of destiny, survival, and evolution. A presence that looms over every episode, creating a sense of dread that elevates the stakes beyond anything the series has attempted before.

What continues to separate X-Men ’97 from many superhero stories is its unwavering commitment to its characters. Cyclops and Jean Grey remain the emotional backbone, navigating impossible choices that challenge both their identities and relationships. Rogue’s grief, Magneto’s moral complexities, and Wolverine’s ongoing struggles all receive meaningful attention, ensuring that even amidst the larger-than-life spectacle, the human element never gets lost. The series understands that the best X-Men stories are ultimately about people trying to find their place in a world that fears them.

Visually, the animation maintains the kinetic energy and vibrant style that made the first season such a revelation, while pushing the scale even further. Action sequences are fluid, inventive, and packed with comic-book flair, yet they never feel empty. Every battle serves the story and reveals something about the characters involved.

Perhaps most impressive is the series’ confidence. Rather than relying solely on nostalgia, X-Men ’97 continues to evolve the mythology in meaningful ways. It honors the legacy of the original animated series while embracing the ambitious storytelling that has defined some of the most influential eras of the comics. New characters, surprising twists, and deeper explorations of mutant ideology ensure that the show remains fresh rather than merely familiar.

If Season 1 was proof that the X-Men still mattered, Season 2 proves that there’s plenty of gas left in the storytelling tank. Rich with emotion, packed with exhilarating action, and anchored by some of the best character work in superhero animation, X-Men ’97 continues its remarkable run and leaves fans eagerly awaiting whatever comes next.

Nick’s Pick: 9/10 X-Men '97 Season 2 doesn't simply capitalize on nostalgia, it builds upon it, delivering a thrilling, heartfelt, and ambitious continuation that reminds viewers why the X-Men remain some of Marvel's most enduring heroes.
