Citizen Kane, a Spellbinding Odyssey:
From Fathom’s Big Screen Classics and Warner Bros, Citizen Kane returns to cinemas celebrating its 85-year anniversary. A film where the presence of greed and power continue to leave an imprint on many around the world. Directed by Orson Welles (Twelfth Night, The Heart of Age), the talented filmmaker also takes on the lead of the film as Charles Foster Kane. Before Citizen Kane, Welles was big in radio as well as the theatrical scene. The word, “ROSEBUD” still rings in my ears with Citizen Kane. Kane’s second wife is Susan Alexander Kane, played by former singer Dorothy Omingore (North of the Yukon, Cafe Hostess). The death of Charles is what makes Citizen Kane the hunt for the truth around why the phrase “ROSEBUD matters. And it is one that feels more invigorating in every moment it is revisited. A 1941 sensation where the truth reveals an elevated meaning in every subsequent watch.
Bonus Features:
Before the film, audiences will hear a few words from film historian and critic Leonard Maltin. He goes into detail about how Citizen Kane received such positivity around the world for its different-type of filmmaking. Especially pertaining to the film’s more mysterious moments in addition to the theme of corrosive greed that spirals throughout the film. Maltin also goes into detail about how the film sparked the career of Orson Welles. He also mentions that he views the film as, “The greatest Hollywood movie ever made!” The acclaimed film historian goes on to point out that the non-linear storytelling and bold camera movements are what constitute Citizen Kane as a masterpiece.
Worth the time?
For those who love classics and the films of Orson Welles, in addition to those who have never seen Citizen Kane, this is very worth the time and money. The conflicts of the estate Xanadu and the many friends and enemies of Charles himself continue an inspiring narrative. The cinematography of black-and-white continues to feel like a restored classic that is not to be missed on the big screen. There are other opportunities to experience Citizen Kane on the big screen.
