The reliability of newscasts is constantly being called into question. Regardless of political belief or affiliation, it has become vital to question the credibility of the media we consume. This has never been truer than in today's volatile global political climate. Polish directors Karolina Fronik and Marta Kowalska present a unique perspective on fake news, exploring the extreme lengths to which some reporters will go to manufacture credibility while chasing ratings. Although a tale of fiction, Greetings from Sumatra is an essential film for the current era.

Greetings from Sumatra centers on a Polish newscaster named Aga. She makes her living by broadcasting live on social media from the front lines of major global crises, including wars and famines. Through this dangerous work, Aga pulls in massive viewership and drives donations to the causes she champions. The general public deeply admires her bravery and sympathizes with the plight of a reporter in the field. However, when her credibility is suddenly called into question, she is forced to reckon with the moral compromises that built her career.

Directors Kowalska and Fronik frame Aga’s story through a patchwork of social media clips that are essential to understanding her digital footprint. It is immediately clear that she has cultivated a massive, intensely loyal online following. In the beginning, the comment section overflows with praise for her bravery. What makes this device so effective, however, is how instantly the tide turns. The moment her credibility is understandably challenged, the adoration morphs into viral vitriol, providing a chillingly accurate reflection of how quickly modern media consumers can turn on their heroes when they are exposed for dishonesty in their reporting.

Target Score 9/10: Greetings from Sumatra is a compelling film set in the world of the news media. Although Aga's integrity is revealed to be less than genuine, the points raised in this short remain essential to the current climate.
