Fan-favorite in the Reacher universe, Frances Neagley, steps into the spotlight with a spin-off that proves she never needed to stand in Jack Reacher’s shadow. Rather than simply recreating the formula that made its predecessor a hit, Neagley carves out its own identity through a more personal mystery, emotionally grounded storytelling, and a determined lead. While audiences will appreciate the deeper connections, the series succeeds by giving its title character room to evolve beyond the capable fighter audiences already know.

Maria Sten (Swamp Thing, Channel Zero) effortlessly carries Francis Neagley with both emotional weight and physicality as season 1 follows the investigation into the suspicious death of a close friend, pulling Francis into a dark conspiracy that opens old wounds while fending off dangerous enemies and confronting the emotional scars of her past. The investigation moves at an engaging pace, balancing mystery with explosive action. Where Reacher (2022) often thrives on its larger-than-life hero dismantling criminal enterprises through brute force, Neagley leans more heavily into detective work, surveillance, and psychological tension. It’s a welcome tonal shift that gives the franchise some variety without sacrificing the riveting action audiences expect. The supporting ensemble also gives Neagley a team-oriented dynamic that prioritizes relationships over a lone-wolf approach, adding another layer to her character.

After establishing the character across multiple seasons of Reacher as fiercely intelligent, relentlessly loyal, and highly skilled, Sten expands those qualities with greater nuance. Francis’s vulnerability never compromises her confidence, and Sten makes that balance convincing. Damon Herriman (Justified) also stands out as an unsettling antagonist who avoids becoming cartoonishly evil. Behind the performances, the series maintains the polished cinematic style expected from Prime Video’s action dramas. The fight choreography is brutal, efficient, and impressively practical, while Chicago provides an effective urban backdrop that contrasts nicely with Reacher’s constantly changing locations. The mystery occasionally struggles to maintain momentum, but the conclusion delivers satisfying emotional payoffs while leaving room for future stories.

Nick’s Pick 7.5/10 Neagley is an entertaining addition to the Reacher universe that accomplishes what many spin-offs struggle to do: justify its own existence. By stepping out of Reacher’s shadow and giving Frances Neagley a story of her own, the series proves there is still plenty of life left in this world.
